Jupiter's US 1 bridge replacement wins a regional engineering award

Sidewalks and bike lanes over the Loxahatchee, a roughly 120-seat tavern on West Indiantown Road, and trick-or-treating at Busch Wildlife.

The 1958 bridge that carried US 1 over the Loxahatchee had no sidewalk and no bike lane. Its replacement has 8-foot sidewalks behind railings, and it just won Best Project in the Highway/Bridge category of Engineering News-Record's 2026 Texas & Southeast awards.

The big story

The new federal bridge carries US 1 for 915 feet across the Loxahatchee River and the Intracoastal Waterway, with a 267-foot drawbridge span at its center. It won Best Project in the Highway/Bridge category of Engineering News-Record's 2026 Texas & Southeast awards, and the same project rehabilitated the SR 811 (Alt A1A) bridge. The crossing it replaced dated to 1958 and was rated structurally deficient. The bigger change for residents is who gets room on it. People on foot or on bikes had no space of their own on the old bridge. The new one gives them 8-foot sidewalks set apart by railings and 7-foot buffered bike lanes, alongside two 11-foot travel lanes each way. The deck also sits higher. Clearance over the channel rose to 42 feet, and FDOT projects roughly 44% fewer bridge openings as a result. That is a forecast, not a measured result.

Little Moir's Sweet Fish brings the Food Shack family to West Indiantown Road

Carved wetlands scenes of raccoons, deer and otters hang above the full bar at Little Moir's Sweet Fish, the newest restaurant from the group behind Food Shack and Leftovers. It is also the group's farthest-west spot, nearer to I-95 and Jupiter Farms than its others. The Little Moir's group has been part of Jupiter dining for more than 20 years, and its co-owners are Mike Moir and Drew Shimkus. Moir pitches Sweet Fish as a modern American tavern aimed at west-side families, not a copy of Food Shack. The menu carries the group's sweet potato-crusted fish and adds a kids' menu. Warm wood fills the room, and an open kitchen line keeps the cooks in view. Seats run to about 120, indoors and out.

Jupiter Goodwill employee marks 19 years on the job

"I like to smile at others, uplift people and make other people smile," Jeffrey McFadden Jr. said of his work at the Jupiter Goodwill. He has been on staff for 19 years, after job training at Goodwill's transition school. McFadden said his dad calls that tenure a big achievement. His milestone lands during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which runs each October. Abra Joseph, who directs donated goods, said 60% of Goodwill's team members self-identify as having some barrier to employment. McFadden has also played center in Special Olympics basketball, where he has won multiple gold medals.

Abacoa therapist and two-time cancer survivor on supporting breast cancer patients

Mental health care often takes a back seat after a cancer diagnosis, says Sara Trosty Walsh. "Most of the time, the referral for mental health is secondary," she says. Walsh has faced cancer twice herself, and last year she founded Wellness Counseling Group, drawing on decades as a therapist and social worker. Her practice offers telehealth statewide and in-person sessions at offices in Abacoa. She and a team of therapists help patients and families with the emotional weight of a diagnosis. Walsh says much of that is grief over the person someone was before cancer. Her message for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is blunt: "Don't wait. Get your mammogram." Separately, this year's Sari 5K Trail Run is set for Nov. 14, with registration on RunSignup.

Forté Luxe waterfront condos set to finish just north of Tequesta in December

In the 1940s, military seaplanes landed on a Martin County peninsula on the Intracoastal Waterway, just over the Tequesta line. Many tried to get the parcel permitted for development before developer Marius Fortelni succeeded. His Forté Luxe project at 12450 Crystal Cove Place is set to finish by December with 15 multilevel waterfront condos and private boat docks. Prices run between $3.98 million and $8 million per condo. Each unit comes with a private garage, an interior elevator and an outdoor terrace with a gas grill. December is a construction target, so the finish date can still move.
