Lead story

Jupiter launches its first-ever fire department

Jupiter now has its own fire department for the first time in town history. Ninety-one firefighters and their families gathered at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre on Monday, June 1, as the town officially launched Jupiter Fire Rescue and its newest members took their oath of service. Fire Chief Darrel Donatto called it the proudest day of his 45-year career, and noted that 29 of the new hires are hometown Jupiter people who came home to serve their community. Among them is Lieutenant Christian Lainhart, a sixth-generation Jupiter resident who previously served with Martin County Fire Rescue. Days later, on Wednesday, June 3, firefighters, town leaders and neighbors gathered near Burt Reynolds Park for the dedication of Fire Station 10 on U.S. Highway 1. The ceremony centered on the uncoupling, a century-old fire-service tradition, followed by a push-in in which crews guided their engine into the bay for the first time. Station 10 will serve the eastern portion of Jupiter, and Deputy Chief Stephen Shaw invited residents to stop in for coffee and meet their first responders. The department's full launch is set for Oct. 1. WPTV reported on the swearing-in and on the Station 10 dedication.
