Jupiter voter says touchscreen kept showing the wrong candidate

Paper ballots are still an option, and Indiantown Road is open again.

About four tries. That is how many attempts one Jupiter voter says it took before a touchscreen at the community center showed the candidate she meant to pick.

The big story

Amanda Mathis says it took about four tries before the right name appeared on her screen at the Jupiter Community Center during early voting. She brought the problem to CBS12, saying the machine kept showing a candidate she had not chosen. Hers is one account of one machine, and it does not show how widespread the problem is. The elections supervisor suggested a simple workaround: tap your selections with a stylus, when one is available. Even with the complaint on record, the supervisor stood by the touchscreens. Their edge over traditional paper, the supervisor said, is that voters can easily fix a mistake before the ballot is cast. Anyone who would rather mark ovals by hand still has that choice. CBS12's Mike Magnoli said to request a paper ballot at check-in, when you show your ID. Early voting continues through Nov. 1, so there is still time to use either method.

Abacoa card shop gives Heat fans another way into the game

Owners Blake and Tabbi Yager credit nostalgia for part of the pull at their shop in Abacoa. Collectors young and old come in to browse, tear into packs and hunt for players they love. Games stay on the TVs, so customers can follow a sport while they open packs. Blake says buyers chase stars across eras, with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant alongside Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. Rookie cards draw the most interest. Right now the most valuable card in the store is a LeBron James rookie numbered to 500. Basketball cards in general can cost mere cents or run into the thousands of dollars. The shop is at 1209 Main St., Suite 112.

Indiantown Road back open after construction gas leak

Jupiter Police said both directions were shut between Island Way and I-95 on Thursday, Oct. 22. Drivers had no open lane through that stretch, in either direction, while it lasted. A Town of Jupiter official said gas leaked while construction work was underway. All lanes were open again by 5:10 p.m. that day.

Each early voting day in Palm Beach County keeps the same schedule, weekends included. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. That leaves the rest of this week and the weekend to vote early in person. The final day is Sunday, Nov. 1. The Jupiter Community Center is one place voters have cast early ballots this cycle. Voters who prefer a paper ballot over a touchscreen can ask for one at check-in.
