Suni Sands development plans head to Town Council Oct. 29

Plus trash rates rise Thursday, turn arrows are coming to Military Trail and Monday is the voter registration deadline.

A hotel, marina and housing plan for the former Suni Sands site goes before the Town Council on Oct. 29. Trash rates rise Oct. 1. WPTV reports that the county will add protected left-turn arrows at two Military Trail intersections. Monday is the last day to register for the Nov. 3 election, and two new applications go to the planning board Oct. 13.

The big story

The Town Council will hold its first reading on development plans for the former Suni Sands property at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Council Chambers at 210 Military Trail. Town notices call the 10.5-acre site at 961 and 997 N A1A the Sperry property.

The owners are asking to build multistory buildings with a hotel, a restaurant, retail and apartments, plus a marina. The request includes waivers from several standards, among them building height in stories, setbacks and parking. The notices do not say how many hotel rooms, homes or boat slips are planned.

The biggest land-use change would designate 5.5 acres as Conservation. The other 5.0 acres would become Inlet Village Flex, which allows a mix of uses. Most of the site is currently designated High Density Residential.

What you can do: Attend and speak on Oct. 29. The council will vote again at a second reading, which has not been scheduled.

Questions on the site plan and uses: Peter Meyer, Planning and Zoning, 561-741-2691. Questions on the land-use and zoning changes: Martin Schneider, 561-741-2290.

Around town

Trash rate goes up $1.57 a month on Thursday

Starting Oct. 1, residential trash collection in Jupiter will cost $25.99 a month, up from $24.42. That covers garbage, yard waste, recycling and bulk pickup. The Town says pickup days will not change.

The increase adds about $18.84 a year per household. The Town adjusts these rates each Oct. 1 under its contract with Waste Management. For service questions or an extra cart, call WM at 772-546-7700.

Protected left-turn arrows planned at two Military Trail intersections

Palm Beach County will add protected green left-turn arrows on Military Trail at University Boulevard and at Frederick Small Road, WPTV reported.

Drivers turning left at these intersections currently have to yield on a green light, often with oncoming traffic hard to see. WPTV reported that the county agreed to the change even though the intersections fall below its usual threshold of five left-turn crashes in 12 months. The request came from Jupiter resident Susan Tinsley, who asked neighbors to contact the county after a crash involving teenagers.

Monday is the last day to register for the Nov. 3 election

The Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections lists Monday, Oct. 5, as the deadline to register for the Nov. 3 general election. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Other county deadlines:

Mail ballot request: Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5 p.m. is the last day to ask for a ballot to be mailed to you. Early voting: Monday, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Nov. 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mail ballot return: Ballots must reach the Main Office by 7 p.m. Nov. 3. The deadline is 5 p.m. at a branch office or secure ballot intake station.

The county asks voters with a Florida driver license or state ID issued since July 31, 2024, to update their voter record, because those cards have new numbers. Check your registration through the county elections office at https://www.votepalmbeach.gov/170/My-Status, or call 561-656-6200.

Delivery warehouse and annexation go to the planning board Oct. 13

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hear two new applications at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Council Chambers at 210 Military Trail.

Walmart Depot, 1830 Park Lane South. The applicant is seeking a special exception for a warehouse larger than 10,000 square feet with local delivery services, on 1.89 acres. The Town Council hearing is Nov. 17.

Palmwood Residential. A 1.47-acre property at the northwest corner of East Frederick Small Road and Palmwood Road is asking to be annexed into Jupiter. The request includes Town low-density residential land use and single-family R-1 zoning. Council readings are set for Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.

The commission makes recommendations, and the Town Council makes the final decisions. Questions on both items go to Jenna Johnston, Planning and Zoning, 561-741-2589.
