Lighthouse shoreline project nears finish with new boardwalk and 22,000 plants

Plus a Sept. 30 stormwater grant deadline, an upcoming Jupiter Farms restaurant, a boil water order listed for one US Hwy 1 address and a Sept. 20 wine dinner.

The lighthouse shoreline project is in its final months, private stormwater grant applications are due Sept. 30, Fabricant Farms is working toward a Jupiter Farms opening, a Town notice posted Sept. 15 lists a boil water order for Buildings 1-20 and A-D and the pool at 1801 S US Hwy 1 through 5 p.m. Sept. 17, and The Jupiter Grill hosts a wine dinner Sept. 20.

The big story

The land around the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is in the final months of a $16 million shoreline stabilization project. Improvements made over the last 18 months include an 830-foot boardwalk along the shoreline with seven staircases for access, plus a retaining wall that will hold some of the 22,000 new plants being placed across the site. The work addresses erosion that had been eating away about 7 feet of land a year, carrying it into the Intracoastal Waterway and out the inlet. Peter DeWitt of the Bureau of Land Management said vegetation from that erosion floated just below the surface and caused problems for boaters, while the collapsing dune created dangers along the shoreline. He said the goal is a multiple-use area, and the intention is also to host regular public fishing programs. Boaters raised concerns about future access, and several boating bays were established on the lagoon side of the lighthouse as a compromise. DeWitt said the busiest weekends drew 40 to 60 boats, while daily use was 17 boats. Jupiter resident Julia Ferguson said the boating plan is disappointing but understandable given how much erosion residents have seen up to the lighthouse. The official ribbon cutting is scheduled for Dec. 3.

Fabricant Farms plans a restaurant in the former Taylor Farmhouse space

Fabricant Farms is planning to open at 16891 Jupiter Farms Rd., in the former Taylor Farmhouse space. Owner Tyler Fabricant described a farmhouse-style restaurant that stays close to how the space was before, with a simple, modern interior opening onto a 2,000-square-foot deck, a 2,000-square-foot covered patio and a separate stage area. The menu will range from flatbreads, handhelds, burgers and tacos to entrees such as fish and steak. Fabricant said the team will work with the former owners to bring back some Taylor Farmhouse classics alongside its own new dishes. The Fab Truck, a food truck he bought during the early stages of construction, will park outside the property serving tacos and burritos. Down the road, he said, the property could add a coffee shop, an ice cream shop, a small market and possibly an arcade. After two years on the project, Fabricant said he hopes to be up and running by the end of the year.

Private stormwater grant applications are due Sept. 30

Homeowners associations and other private entities inside Jupiter town limits have until Sept. 30 to apply for the Town's Private Stormwater Improvement Grant Program, which takes applications by March 31 and Sept. 30 each year. The matching reimbursement grant can cover up to 50% of actual construction costs for eligible new improvements, though no minimum or maximum award is guaranteed and awards depend on Town Council approval and available budget. Projects must improve water quality, resolve nuisance flooding or control erosion of private lake banks and detention areas. Examples include exfiltration trenches, grassed swales, aerators, fountains, new stormwater pipe, geo-tubes and rock rip rap. Repairs to existing pipe and structures do not qualify. A committee of three Utilities staff members scores complete, eligible applications on project impact and cost effectiveness, and a minimum score of 6 out of 10 from a majority of the committee is needed for consideration. Eligible applicants sign a grant agreement that goes to the Town Council for approval, pay for the work in full, and are reimbursed only after Town field inspections are approved, with paid invoices required to certify actual costs. Applications can be emailed to stormwater@jupiter.fl.us, submitted online or mailed to Utilities Field Administration at 17403 Central Boulevard, and questions go to 561-741-2705.
