Jupiter Middle School is grieving a history teacher
Lane closures through Friday, plus a free open gym and a 50+ balance class this morning.

Kevin Burns taught U.S. history and civics at Jupiter Middle School for more than 20 years. He died August 14 after being caught in a current while snorkeling off Jupiter. A former student wrote that she became a history teacher because of him. About 70 teachers and parents gathered to remember him that night. School counselors and additional district mental-health counselors are on campus this week, along with School Police and a therapy dog. Families who need help outside school hours can call the free, confidential 211 HelpLine. Burns' family is planning a celebration of life near the water; no date has been announced.
Fresh asphalt on Tony Penna Drive through Friday
If your morning runs through Tony Penna Drive, give yourself extra minutes today and tomorrow. Asphalt paving is closing lanes on Tony Penna Drive and Bush Road through Friday, August 21. Traffic is being maintained through the work, so you are looking at delays, not detours. This is the scheduled final phase after earlier roadway widening on Bush Road. The Town says the dates are anticipated and can shift. Weather or unforeseen issues can move them. In August in Florida, that is not a small caveat.
An hour of tai chi for the over-50 crowd
Same building, same start time, very different room. The 50+ Balance for Healthy Aging class meets at 200 Military Trail from 8:15 to 9:15 this morning. It is built for adults 50 and over, and it is gentle by design. Each session mixes mindful stretching with easy tai chi movements. They are meant to build body awareness and settle the nervous system. Balance is one of those things nobody thinks about until they have to. An hour of slow, deliberate movement is a fair hedge against that, and it is a soft landing for a Thursday.
Jupiter is enforcing its residential commercial-vehicle rule
A Town code notice targets a landscaping company's white Ford bucket truck. It must leave a residential district by August 26. Jupiter's ordinance bars buses, trailers, tractors and trucks rated above three-quarters of a ton from residential streets, rights-of-way or property for more than one hour unless they are being loaded or unloaded. The notice says missing the deadline could lead to an appearance before the Code Compliance Special Magistrate. The useful reminder is broader than one case: oversized commercial vehicles have a one-hour limit in residential areas.
Tequesta has resurfacing coming to Old Dixie Highway
Old Dixie Highway resurfacing from A1A to County Line Road continues through Friday, August 21. Drivers should expect intermittent lane and road closures along Old Dixie. Closures also affect the Tequesta Drive railroad crossing. Traffic will be maintained, but short delays are expected during daytime work. Some driveways may be briefly blocked while paving passes directly in front of them. If Old Dixie is part of your daily loop, add travel time or use another route. Slow down around crews, signs and shifting traffic patterns.
The gym at 200 Military Trail belongs to toddlers this morning
Open gym runs from 8:15 to 11:00 today, split into three 45-minute Thursday slots. Children ages 0 to 4 can come to any of them, and there is no charge. The Town puts out mats, blocks, giant Legos, balls, trikes and things to climb on. That covers most of what a two-year-old considers essential. Parent facilitation is required, so this is not a drop-off. Bring your coffee and expect to use your knees. It is a reasonable answer to the stretch of morning when everyone is awake and nobody is tired.
