Lead story

Town approves fire fee ahead of Oct. 1 fire-rescue launch

Jupiter's Town Council has approved a fire assessment fee to help fund the town's new fire-rescue department, which begins service on Oct. 1. The fee is the funding step tied to launching that department, moving Jupiter from planning toward operating its own local fire-rescue service this fall. With the approval in place, Oct. 1 stands as the date the new department is scheduled to begin covering the town. It marks a change in how fire-rescue service in Jupiter is organized and paid for, with the assessment attached to the new operation. The fee approval is one of the final major steps before the department stands up its own operations, and residents can expect the town to finalize the transition over the summer as that start date approaches. Jupiter firefighters deploy to Venezuela

Firefighters from Jupiter have joined counterparts from Delray Beach and elsewhere in Palm Beach County in deploying to Venezuela as part of a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force responding to an earthquake. The deployment sends local first responders overseas to assist with search-and-rescue operations alongside the federal task force. For Jupiter, it means members of the local fire service are among those taking part in the international response, working with crews drawn from across the county. The effort places area firefighters on a federally coordinated mission far from home. (WPTV)
